KUCHING: A security guard succumbed to his injuries and died of head injuries at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) after he was assaulted and admitted in a coma last month.

Istiram Rajamanikan aged 50 from Jalan Sim Kheng Hong, Kenyalang Park, here died at 6.09 am yesterday after being attacked on the morning of July 14 this year by his brother in-law with a steel pipe. Both were staying together and working as security guards at the Sarawak General Hospital.

The suspect was arrested immediately after the assault and remanded for three days. He was released on police bail.

It was alleged that both the suspect and the victim were drinking with friends. After the friends left their house, the suspect was angry with his son and kept scolding him. The victim said he wanted to go to sleep and scolded the suspect for being noisy. This resulted in a quarrel and the suspect punched the victim. He went out and took a pipe and went to the victim’s room again and stabbed him causing the victim to bleed profusely.

An ambulance was called to the house and the victim was rushed to the hospital unconscious. The victim had also undergone surgery at the hospital. Police were called to the scene after the assault and an investigation was initiated. Police also seized a pipe as case exhibit. The deceased was a divorcee with four children. A post mortem will be conducted soon.
