MIRI: An armed man believed to be mentally ill ran amok behind a bus stop near a supermarket here, Friday morning. However, the man in his 60s who was armed with two knives was arrested by police and taken to Miri Central Police Station for further action.

It was said the 9.00am incident had caused fear among the visitors of the supermarket who called the police for assistance.

District Police chief, ACP Khoo Leng Huat confirmed the incident and said while trying to coax the man into surrendering himself to the police, the latter became aggressive and pointed one of the knives at the police personnel.

“A struggle ensued and the police managed to detain the suspect and confiscated the knives,” he said in a statement here.

Khoo said the suspect was taken to Miri Hospital to undergo psychology evaluation. “The doctor who treated the suspect confirmed that he was suffering from mental disturbance,” he said. Khoo added that the case is being investigated under Section 186 and 506 of the Penal Code.
