KUCHING: The Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre has been officially opened for the public starting yesterday.

This will be the first public swimming pool to be opened in Petra Jaya, here.

Its operation hours will be 2.00pm to 8.00pm on weekdays while on weekends and public holidays it will open from 9.00am to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 8.00pm.

The entry fee will be at a minimal RM2.50 for children aged 2 to 17 years old while those above the age 18 years old will be charged RM4.50.

Alternatively, there is a prepaid card for 11 entries at RM25 (children) and RM40 (adults).

Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who officiated the opening ceremony of the centre, told the media in a press conference Wednesday that the public swimming pool will be managed by Akademi Renang Bestari.

“We hope that families, particularly from Petra Jaya will flock the pool and bring their children here for their recreational activities.

“At the same time, bringing them here will introduce them to swimming and initiate their interest in the sport. From there we can nurture them into swimming athletes.

“Here at the centre, we have trained individuals who can prepare our young ones for the sport and also lifeguards who will be on the watch for both training and recreational purposes at the centre,” said Karim.

Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre is the fourth public pool here besides the ones at Stampark, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Youth and Sports Complex.
