KUCHING: Sarawak and Johor contingents were the joint overall champions in the just concluded 11th National-level Chinese Language Creative Writing Camp and Competition 2017 which ended here yesterday.
The Excellent Supervisory Teacher Award which had two winners were won by Yek Leh Meu from SMK Matang Hilir, Kuching Sarawak; and Goh Sok Kein from SMK Jementah, Johor .
108 students from all the states in the country participated in the three-day camp and competition from 9 to 11 August.
The categories competed were Poems, Prose and Short Story for Lower Secondary Schools and Poems, Prose and Short Story for Upper Secondary Schools.
The winners in the Poems for Lower Secondary Schools category were Chin Jie Mei from SMK Hillcrest, Selangor; Chai May Cheng of SMK Matang Hilir, Kuching Sarawak; and Lim Yun Qi from SMK Seri Keledang, Perak.
In the Prose for the Lower Secondary Schools Category, the winners were Chiu Jie Yu from SMK Kidurong, Bintulu Sarawak; Sueann Khoo Zhi Ching from SMK Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir, Penang; and Ngu Yu Ling from SMK Rompin, Pahang.
In the Short Story for Lower Secondary School Category, the winners were Pang Jun Wen from SMK Jementah, Johor; Neong Yee Lay from SMK Tun Aminah, Johore; and Tien Qin Yue from SMK Raja Jumaat, Negeri Sembilan.
In the Prose for the Upper Secondary Schools Category, the winners were Goh Wee Hong from SMK Tun Mutahir Malacca; Khor Mei Wei from SMK St. George, Perak; and Hew Jing Min from SMJK Choong Hua, Bidor Perak.
The winners in the Poems for the Upper Secondary Schools category were Phoebe Lim Rou En from SMK Matang Hilir Kuching Sarawak; Chan Wei Hung from SMK Jitra, Kedah; and Kwong Chea Chuang from SMJK Dindings, Perak.
In the Short Story for Upper Secondary Schools category, the winners were Ong Lee Xuan from SMK Dato Mohd Taha, Negeri Sembilan; Chong Ro Xuan from SMK Munshi Ibrahim, Johor; and Cheng Yan Tong from SMJK Katholik, Selangor.
Minister of Local Government and Housing Professor Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian officiated at the closing of the Chinese Language Creative Writing Camp and presented prizes and certificates to the winners at a hotel here yesterday.
In his speech, Dr Sim said there are 600 million people in the ASEAN region and 300 million are less than 30 years old.
“If you are not good and not competitive, you cannot survive. Opportunities are not going to wait for you because we have 300 million people looking for opportunities.
“This is how competiveness we are. But if we are good, from the jungle of Borneo, we can go elsewhere but never forget to give back,” he said.
State Education Director Rakayah Binti Haji Madon also spoke during the function.
180 students from thorough the 14 states in the country participated in the three-day camp from 9-11 August.
The 12th National-level Secondary School Chinese Language Creative Writing Competition 2018 will be hosted by Sabah.
