KUCHING: A local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Hope Place recently extended a helping hand to 66-year-old Lai Chow Chin, a bedridden stroke survivor residing in Taman Sri Moyan, Matang.

Lai, a former school bus driver, came down with stroke in May, resulting in paralysis in over half his body.

Tragically, he has lost the ability to recognise his loved ones and communicate. His situation is compounded by diabetes, further complicating his health.

Lai’s devoted wife, Siew Lian, also battles adversity, having lost her sight due to diabetes four years ago.

She, too, suffered a stroke that impaired her speech. Despite her challenges, she cares for Lai with unwavering dedication, employing a suction machine to manage her own health concerns.

Lai’s 37-year-old son, Sor Hua, shoulders the responsibility of being the sole breadwinner.

As a supervisor in a Kuching coffee shop chain, he sometimes takes on cooking duties as well.

Although he manages to provide essentials for his family, catering to his father’s specialised needs poses a financial challenge.

Hope Place  is offering critical support to Lai, supplying essential items such as special milk supplements and adult diapers on a bi-monthly basis.

This assistance brings relief to the family as they navigate through their complex and trying circumstances.
