BAU: Hope Place has stepped forward to provide crucial support to 45-year-old Jason Chew Fook Hin in his fight against parotid cancer.

The non-governmental organisation in a statement on Thursday (Dec 28) revealed that Chew was diagnosed with this rare form of cancer in April of this year.

“He began to feel unwell last year November but dismissed it as ordinary sickness. His left cheek was swollen and although he can still eat solid food, chewing was very painful for him. Doctors had advised him to take special milk supplements and softer food like rice porridge,” it said.

Chew, along with his wife Norhasimah, previously operated a home-based business selling stationery to offices and schools.

However, they had to close their business during the movement control order. Last year, the couple worked at a motorcycle workshop, with Norhasimah selling homemade ‘kuih’ and doing bundle sales to provide for their family.

The recent turn of events has left both unable to work, with Chew starting chemotherapy in November this year, a biweekly treatment that requires him to undergo therapy five days a week.

With two young children and the responsibility of taking Chew to the hospital, Norhasimah finds her hands full.

The family is currently renting a small flat at PPR Landeh. Burdened by rent and a car loan, the couple faces an uncertain future with no income.

Despite these challenges, they express gratitude for the support from Norhasimah’s parents and siblings.

The NGO is supporting the family with food aid and milk powder for the younger children, as well as supplies of special milk supplements for Chew.
