KUCHING: Construction activities in Tupong constituency will be temporarily halted during Ramadan and the onset of Syawal to ease road congestion.

Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the construction work, particularly the sewerage projects at Jalan Matang, Jalan Pinang Jawa, Kampung Laruk Skim, and Taman Rahmat, would be suspended during that period.

“I, together with Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) have met with the Department of Sewerage Services Sarawak to request them to temporarily stop construction during Ramadan because we know that road conditions are very congested during this time.

“Thankfully, the Department of Sewerage Services and the contractor have agreed to stop the construction of the sewerage channel bridge for the time being, and we expect this project to be completed within the specified time,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the Emart Matang Ramadan Bazaar at Emart Matang, Petra Jaya here today (Mar 14).

Addressing the potholes in areas undergoing construction, Fazzrudin said he had informed heads of the community to reach out to DBKU regarding hazardous road conditions.

He said Department of Sewerage Services will then be prompted to facilitate necessary repair works to be done for the safety of road users.

He added that the roads had yet to be repaved because construction was still ongoing in the area.

“We understand that while sometimes it may seem like there is no ongoing construction in the area, it is actively being carried out on the ground.

“However, we have already identified the area that is ready to be repaved, and it will be paved in the near future,” he said.

Regarding the Emart Matang Ramadan Bazaar, it comprises 60 stalls providing a diverse array of food options for visitors to enjoy during their breaking of the fast.
