KUCHING: Matters concerning the wellbeing of the people particularly the increased price of goods and cost of living will be brought up at the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting scheduled to begin on July 18.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the proposal on the matter to be discussed at a special parliamentary sitting is necessary.

“There is no need to hold a special sitting as the Dewan Raykat will convene in the next nine days.

“First, it will incur big expenses to have a special parliamentary sitting. All MPs including the officers need to go down to the Dewan Raykat, meaning this will involve extra costs.

“Hence, Members of Parliament (MPs) can discuss the matter during the upcoming parliamentary sitting and based on the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat whether to allow it or not,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after handing over 66 sacrificial cows for Santubong parliamentary constituency in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration at the Agriculture Department Livestock Quarantine Station at Jalan Bako today.

Wan Junaidi was prompted for comments on the proposal by Pakatan Harapan (PH) Cost of Living Committee chairman Hassan Karim for a special parliamentary sitting to discuss the issue of increase of price of goods and cost of living during the Dewan Rakyat sitting this month.

The Sanbutong MP added that a motion can be submitted by the MPs to raise any issues that are outside the agenda or agreement that has been set by the Parliament.

Meanwhile, commenting on the programme, he expressed his appreciation to the federal government for approving a huge allocation to buy the cows for the purpose to perform the Ibadah Korban (slaughter of sacrificial animal) in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration.

With that, Wan Junaidi, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Simanggang branch chief said a total of 72 cows were donated, with 66 for the Muslim community in Santubong parliamentary constituency and the remaining for those outside Sri Aman.
