SARIKEI: Tanjung Manis MP Yusuf Abdul Wahab has clarified that only some houses in Belawai located at the end of the piping system are experiencing low water pressure, especially during the dry season.

In fact, the problem of water disruption in the area did not happen all the time, he said, when commenting on the statement by Works Minister Baru Bian on water problems in Tanjung Manis, especially in Kampung Belawai.

“The problem of water disruption to Tanjung Manis area including Kampung Belawai is from the water treatment plant in Sarikei whose transmission pipeline is almost 30 years old and easily broken thus causing leakages.

“I was informed by the Department of Rural Water Supply (JBALB), a new pipeline will be built from the Sarikei plant to Tanjung Manis as well as upgrading three water pumps from Baji Water Pump Station to cope with water shortages in Tanjung Manis,” he told Suara Sarawak after officiating at the inauguration ceremony of the Sarikei People’s Festival yesterday.

He believed that Baru did not understand the real problem and did not get accurate information when commenting on water problems in the Tanjung Manis area when attending the Gawai Raya in Belawai on Saturday.

“Our minister was not aware of the real situation and was influenced by irresponsible parties who have a certain political agenda,” Yusuf said.

Earlier in his speech, Yusuf wanted the youth to seize opportunities provided by the government to raise their standard of living by engaging in skills and entrepreneurships.

The festival attracted more than 2,000 people.
