JULAU: A man died while five others sustained injuries in a collision between a van and a lorry at Rantau Abau, Jalan Julau-Nanga Entabai last Friday.

The incident happened around 3.40pm when the lorry was travelling from Nanga Entabai and the van was returning from Julau town.

Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu disclosed that the van with five passengers on board (including the victim), is believed to have gone out of control while descending Rantau Abau hill.

“As a result, the van skidded into the opposite lane and collided with the oncoming lorry.

“One of the passengers in the van, identified as Mawan Belaja, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver and others sustained injuries,” he said.

The five injured victims were helped out of the wreckage by passing motorists while another had to be extricated by firefighters.

Alexson added that the victim’s body was later taken by paramedics to Sarikei Hospital for further actions.
