KUCHING: Football is arguably the most popular sport with an estimated 3.5 billion fans around the world.

In a bid to develop the love for the sport among school children, while at the same time teaching them proper nutrition, international child-focused organisation World Vision Malaysia, Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and Zurich Insurance teamed up for ‘One Goal Malaysia’ campaign.

Last Saturday, over 40 SK Sacred Heart, Semeba’s school children aged between six and 12 years old took part in the first session of the ‘One Goal: Eat, Play, Live Right’ basic football techniques training at Kampung Semeba football field, here.

The fun and pressure-free environment programme was conducted by a group of Kampung Semeba’s youth volunteer coaches, led by Arturo Mojo.

“We’re proud to be associated with One Goal Malaysia. This long term social responsibility strategy programme is to promote nutrition among children through sports development,” said Arturo.

“We also want to give them a positive introduction to sport as a whole, not just football, so they’re more likely to stay healthy and active throughout their lives,” he added.

“This is a fantastic opportunity. It is our joint dream, with the two football organisations, to develop a new breed of football stars that can compete in the international arena,” he added.

“Disciplining a student and proper nutrition play a crucial part in sports development. By ensuring that children are healthy, active and well-trained, we give them an equal chance to compete and to be champions,” he added.

Some children are seen resting during the pressure-free environment programme last Saturday.

Meanwhile, the second session of the Kampung Semeba’s One Goal Malaysia campaign will be held at the same venue on July 1, at 4pm.

“We welcome all young football lovers to come and be part of the campaign. We believe, the One Goal Malaysia campaign has the potential to help children reach their full potential,” Arturo said.
