One month jail for bribe offer

KUCHING: A businessman, who tried to bribe an Immigration officer with cash after he smuggled several Indonesians into the state illegally, was sentenced to a month’s jail on Monday (May 3).

Kuching Session’s Court Judge Steve Ritikos ordered Wong Zhong Zhan to be detained in Puncak Borneo prison after he pleaded guilty under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.

The court ordered the sentence against Wong to start from Mar 18.

The accused admitted to bribing a Sarawak Immigration officer, Noron Yusup, after he illegally smuggled several Indonesians into Sarawak.

Wong committed the offence at 6.44am near Jalan Bau-Lundu in Kuching on Nov 18 last year.

He was charged under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
