PAC delegation attends symposium in London

KUCHING: Eight members of the Sarawak Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and six exofficio members including a clerk of PAC are among a delegation attending the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies 5th Annual Public Accounts Committee Symposium held at Strand Palace Hotel, London, England from 16-17 October. The Sarawak PAC delegation was led by its chairman Batang Sadong Assemblyman, Aidel Lariwoo.

The other members were Kabong Assemblyman, Mohd Chee Kadir, Tanjung Batu Assemblyman, Chiew Chiu Sing, Opar As semblyman, Datuk Ranum Mina, Batu Lintang Assemblyman , See Chew How, Tellian Assemblyman, Yussibnosh Balo, Batu Kitang Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang and Ngemah Assemblyman, Alexander Vincent. Also in the delegation were secretary of Sarawak PAC, Semawi Mohamas, ex-officio members, Datu Jumastapha Lamat, Toiyah Tioh, Grace Hii Hui Hing and Antonio Kahti Galis.

Chairman of the Sabah PAC, Ahmad Bujang was also among the delegates to the symposium. Among the topics discussed on 16 Oct were PAC best practices: Remit, scope and range, analysing common obstacles to prudent spending and why they happen, respond, responsibilities of PAC chairperson and how to identify misuse of public money (case study and resolution).

On 17 Oct, the delegates discussed ways to identify and overcome challenges and managing an inquiry, making the accountability concept operational for public finance, working with other actors in a challenging environment : Policy of Parliament and other public actors and measuring the impact of PAC. Members of the delegation are also expected to visit the United Kingdom Parliament and observe the PAC in action, besides visiting the National Archives, UK.
