BINTULU: Parents are their children’s first teachers at home and after their children go to school, parents should monitor their progress and educational performances carefully.

Senator Rita Sarimah Patrick Insol gave this advice at the Parent and Teacher Consensus Council and the launch of the school magazine ‘Ensera Kitai’ at SK Kelawit here today.

Apart from academic excellence, parents needed to teach their children moral values and mental toughness.

Rita added that parents also needed to work hand in hand with schools to ensure that children learn well.

She reminded parents to get in touch with teachers who were in charge to discuss their children’s progress.

“Psychologically, praise and rewards motivate children to do better academically,” said Rita.

She also called on schools to identify pupils with learning difficulties and pay them extra attention, especially in the early stages of learning in primary and pre-school, so that they could move on to Grade 2 and beyond.
