SIBU: After 33 years of moving in and out of various premises here, the Sibu branch of the Malaysia Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) finally has a building to call its own.

An elated Perkim Sibu chairperson Datin Sharifah Zaidah Syed Abdul Aziz said that it was a dream come true as the organisation now had its own premises at Jalan Bandung, here.

“In December 2019, Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak Sibu branch set aside a new office for Perkim Sibu. Now our branch is the only one out of 21 branches in the state that has its own building.

“I would like to thank Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee and Temenggong Datuk Wan Hamid Edruce for their help in realising our dream to have a place that we can call our own,” she said, adding that there would no longer have move from one place to another.

Sharifah said that Perkim Sibu was launched on October 19, 1989, at the Sibu Civic Centre by the then chairperson of Perkim Sarawak, the late Puan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr Laila Taib.

“In 1992 it was located at a house at Jalan Kampung Dato here, to run our activities under the leadership of branch chairperson Sharifah Aminah Syed Junaidi.”

After three years, the Perkim Sibu office and activity centre were relocated to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) building at Jalan Bandong.

“Then in 2003, the office was relocated to a government quarters at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit. And in 2014, Perkim Sibu moved to the Sibu Islamic Complex before Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak finally allocated a new building for the organisation in December 2019,” she said.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Premier’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang yesterday (July 11).

Also present was Nangka assemblyman’s wife Dr Haniza Zainal Abidin.
