SIBU: Most of those who have handphones often use them to take photographs instead of making calls.

Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew, who pointed this out, this showed the importance of photography in life.

“It records things for us to appreciate and remember. I thank the state government for strongly supporting culture, arts and creative activities.

“I still take a lot of photographs with my handphone and share them on Instagram and Facebook,”he said when speaking as the guest of honour at the 70th anniversary celebration of the Photographic Society of Sibu (PSS) at a hotel here on Sunday evening (Dec 18).

Lau, who served as the society’s vice president three decades ago, said because of the society, he had the opportunity to travel around Sarawak to appreciate the beauty and culture of the various ethnic groups.

He attributed the long existence of the society to its members’ love for photography.

“We have a lot of societies in Sibu but not many serve meaningful purposes.

“So long as you appreciate what photography can do for our society, this society will always be there. It is a platform to share and appreciate photography and foster brotherhood.

“Photography breaks all barriers of race, religion, language and everything.

“Now everyone is a photorapher because in your pocket, you have a camera. Photography has now become universal,” added Lau.
The event also witnessed the presentation of appreciation certificates to all past presidents present, the launching of the society’s 70th anniversary magazine and a photography competition featuring two local models.

Among those present were the principal assistant secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry & Performing Arts Sarawak Dr Elena Chai, director of University Technology of Sarawak (UTS)’s Centre for Research & Development Prof. Dr Salfarina Abd Gapor, Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee of the Sarawak Chinese Cultural Association, president of PPS Peter Lee, vice president Desmond Ngu Chien Yew and the event’s organising chairman Roger Tiong Tak Liong.
