MIRI: The Greater Miri Development Plan 2030 will transform Miri City into an economic hub and smart city that provides support services and facilities to the people.

Minister of Transport and Senadin assemblyman Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin said in order to materialise the vision, Miri City needed linkages with the hinterland through good infrastructures to facilitate more economic activities relating to tourism and commercial agriculture to be carried out.

Speaking at a Chinese New Year gathering organised by the Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations Sarawak on Saturday night at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country club, Lee said, the proposals included better road networks and digital infrastructure connectivity between Miri City and the hinterland, such as Mulu, Baram, Telang Usan, Beluru and Subis.

“The Greater Miri Development Plan 2030 has been proposed during a two-day two-night lab held in 2020 by the Economic Planning Unit of Sarawak with various ministries and agencies to hive inputs on the plan including our Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) assemblymen and MPs,” he said.

He also thanked Miri voters for their strong support in the recent Sarawak election (PRN12).

“All the three of us, namely, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew (Piasau), Adam Yii Siew Sang (Pujut) and myself, have pledged that we will work hard and do our very best for the betterment of Miri and its people and towards the realisation of the Greater Miri Plan 2030. Let us all work closely together for the betterment, progress and development of Miri,” he asserted.

He added, the strong mandate given by the people of Sarawak in the recent election to GPS under Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership would ensure that Sarawak has a strong and stable government that would always place Sarawak first.

“This will ensure that there is political stability and Sarawak GPS government can focus on the progress and development as well as the well-being of the people. Investors, both domestic and foreign, will also have more confidence to invest in Sarawak. This can bring about more employment and business opportunities,” he pointed out.

Following the recent amendment to the Federal Constitution, Sarawak and Sabah are now constitutionally recognised as equal partners with Malaya in the Malaysian federation, Lee said.

“Therefore, it is appropriate that Sarawak use a new nomenclature for our head of government in order to rightfully depict its status accordingly and not on the same status as the chief minister of Penang or Malacca or menteri besar of the other states in Peninsular Malaysia,” he added.

Lee said that the spirit of togetherness and unity of the people of Sarawak has provided the strength and motivation for Abang Johari to untiringly and unceasingly pursue the restoration of Sarawak’s rights which have been taken away or eroded.

“With the strong support and unity of the people of Sarawak, it has strongly motivated Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari to actively continuing to pursue the legacy set by his predecessor, the late Tok Nan to fight for Sarawak rights and privileges in accordance with MA63, Inter-Governmental Committee Report (IGC), Cobbold Commission Report and other relevant documents,” he said.
