Police hunting for culprits in unarmed gang robbery

KANOWIT: Police here are on the hunt for four men for allegedly robbing a man at Nanga Ngungun in the wee hours of last Tuesday (Nov 22).

The incident happened around 2am when the 49-year-old man was driving his pickup truck alone to Song from Sibu.

Kanowit district police chief DSP Tega Bilong said at the time of the incident, the victim stopped his vehicle after he came across four unknown men and a motorcycle lying on the road.

“The suspects later ran towards the victim and ordered him to hand over the car keys to them.

“However, the victim refused to abide by them and attempted to leave the area but, his attempt was prevented by the suspects.

“A fight later ensued between the victim and the suspects. The victim then sustained chest and back injuries due to self-defence,” he said, adding that the victim lost a sum of RM870.

Tega stated that the suspects believed to be two locals and two foreigners, quickly fled the scene when another car was seen passing the area.

A police report was lodged by the victim at Kanowit police station the next day (Nov 23).

The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for unarmed gang robbery.
