KUCHING: Sarawak police will step up its compliance monitoring and enforcement of the standard operating procedure (SOP) throughout the imposition of the statewide movement control order (MCO) from May 29 until June 11.

Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said enforcement and roadblock operations would be conducted similar to that of previous implementations of MCO 1.0 and 2.0 in the state.

“Yes, the police have received the directives from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC),” he confirmed to New Sarawak Tribune today.

In view of the upcoming MCO, Aidi advised the people to continue abiding by the set SOP guidelines and stay at home.

“The people are advised to follow the SOP and stay at home if there are no important matters outside. Together we take care of ourselves,” he added.

SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas had earlier announced that the state will be put under MCO for two weeks.

He said the move was taken in view of the rife Covid-19 cases in Sarawak as well as the detection of new variant of concerns (VoC).

“We need to take more drastic action to curb the spread of Covid-19, before we are in an even worse situation.

‘Hence, SDMC has decided to declare the implementation of MCO throughout Sarawak for the period of May 29 to June 11.

“Stricter guidelines and SOPs under the MCO are very important to help reduce the Covid-19 outbreak in Sarawak,” said Uggah.
