Policeman killed when car crashes, hits road divider

SERIAN: A police constable was killed after his car skidded and crashed into a road divider along Sungai Sabang Bridge this morning.

The victim identified as Mohd Shamezad Mohd Salehuddin, is a constable attached to Serian police station.

Police photo shows the condolence message to the victim’s family from the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK).

Serian district police chief DSP Aswandy Anis in a statement, said they received information around 6.35 am and deployed a team to the scene along KM42, Jalan Kuching-Serian.

On arrival, they confirmed that a blue Honda car driven by the 28-year-old victim was severely wrecked as the front part of the car was torn apart.

“We believe that the victim, who was driving to Serian, had lost control of his car and crashed into a road divider before crashing onto the concrete part of Sungai Sabang Bridge.

“As a result, the driver was thrown out of the car and ended by the roadside.

“The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and his body was taken to Serian Hospital for post-mortem,” he said.

Aswandy stated that the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Serian station conducted flushing works at the scene to ensure that the road was clear from debris and oil spills for other road users.

The operation ended around 8.10 am and the team subsequently returned to their station.
