KUCHING: Sarawak has the potential to be a producer of biofuel, and once it is achieved, would be another stream of revenue for the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the production of biofuel could be sourced from algae and carbon dioxide.

“Not all carbon will go to waste, its gas can be retrieved and when you combine it with algae, can produce biofuel.

“We may be producing biofuel, so don’t worry. This will definitely strengthen our economy especially towards the green economy,” he said when officiating at the 27th Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) at its headquarters here today.

He also said that with the recent amendment to the Sarawak Land Code, which allows the state to regulate carbon storage, Koreans were already showing interest to store their carbon here.

“I just met them (Korean) yesterday (May 20), and they informed me that Korea produces a lot of carbon and they want to store it in our state.

“I told them that, after the technical study is done, and once the geological transformation allows it and with the available capacity, they can store the carbon in Sarawak,” he said

Abang Johari said this would be another source of income for Sarawak, hence there was no need to worry if Sarawak would go bankrupt as claimed by certain parties before this.
