KUCHING: Sarawak welcomes the establishment of more Tier 4 artificial intelligence (AI) data centres by the private sector.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said however these data centres require power to run.

“You need power to run the Tier 4 data centres. But if you don’t have the power, you also cannot set up the data centres.

“For that reason, we (Sarawak) want to enhance our energy production.”

He said this when officiating at the Digital Transformation Via Accelerated Application seminar held at Pullman Hotel here on Tuesday (Sept 19).

Abang Johari added that Sarawak has the potential to produce 20,000 megawatt (MW) of hydropower without having to take up a lot of landmass.

“Sarawak has a lot of rivers and the people don’t use rivers anymore as there are good roads and accessibility.

“Therefore, another solution is that we can adopt an approach of producing hydropower from cascading dams,” he said.

He added these approaches have been carried out in Europe; Tasmania, Australia and Nordic countries and Sweden produces 45,000 MW of hydropower from small cascading dams and exports it to Europe.

“At the same time, with the use of cascading dams, there will be less crocodiles in the rivers as the crocodile might stay away from the area and maybe this is one of the ways to control breeding of crocodiles,” he said.
