KUCHING: The Malaysian Scouts Federation Sarawak Branch has been encouraged to create a mobile application for the scouts to record their Job Week activities.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this would be in line with the move towards digital technology in the state.

“I spoke to Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom (Sarawak Scout Council president) previously that I have not heard of Job Week for a long time.

“In the past, we as scouts used to visit people’s houses to clean their drains, cut grass and others and be paid a minimum of RM1 to RM2.

“I have done this and after we finished the job, we recorded it in a Blue Card for record purposes. But today, maybe the record book can be replaced with a mobile application so that people who need help from the scouts and the people and the scouts can be connected directly through the application,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Sarawak First Rover Moot at Kuching Waterfront today.

Meanwhile, National Scouts acting chief commissioner Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Zin Bidin said that Malaysia Scout Federation is currently promoting community-based scouting.

“On this extended platform, Rover Scouts who have exceeded the age of 26  will be able to help other young people in gaining the knowledge, experience and skills in their endeavour to be of service to others,” he said, adding that Sarawak possesses a good environment to establish community-based scouting.

On another note, he said this year marks 70 years of Sea Scouting in the country and that Sarawak has vast potential in becoming a Sea Scouts Centre of Excellence.

“The Sarawak coastline is about 1,035 kilometres long, with its coastal habitat consisting of sandy beaches, mudflats and rocky shores.

“Sarawak, which is one of the world’s mega diversity regions, would  enable scouts to acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and experience of maintaining coastal marine habitats and marine parks,” he said.
