SARATOK: Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri has pointed out that silat, as a sport, should be perceived as a struggle to preserve the art, culture, and heritage of the Malay community, extending beyond its role in self-defence.

He stated that silat possesses a unique significance, serving not only as a martial art for self-defence but as a sport dedicated to preserving the rich art, culture and heritage of the Malay community.

“If we don’t defend it, it could be lost in the modern world,” he said after a meeting with representatives from the Sarawak Gayong Silat Association (PSSGS) Betong Branch, represented by its secretary Nukiman Sahat.

Mohamad stressed that the community’s role is not just to engage in sports but also to honour and uplift the culture and art of Sarawak Malay silat.

During the meeting, plans for various activities throughout 2024 were discussed between PSSGS and the Kalaka Assemblyman Service Centre.

“I always fully support every healthy activity because it will attract the youth to participate, contributing to the reduction of social issues among young people.
