KUCHING: A mixed development project valued at RM480 million to be implemented by UDA Holdings Berhad and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) here will change Kuching’s landscape and contribute towards restoring the state’s economy, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“I believe that this project will benefit our development framework in Kuching, providing facilities not just for the locals but also for visitors who come to Sarawak,” he said.

He said this when speaking at a ceremony at Grand Margherita Hotel here yesterday for the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on joint venture development between UDA Holdings Berhad and SEDC.

He said that the major project could provide facilities for the ‘Sarawak My Second Home Programme’ as foreigners could invest and purchase the apartment units, which are a component of the mixed development project.

“UDA has previously assisted our entrepreneurs in Sarawak as well — helping to develop the satellite town area now called Tabuan Jaya. The main developer was the late Wan Alwi Ibrahim under Ibraco,” he said.

The project would include two 24-storey apartment blocks equipped with a gymnasium, swimming pool, playground facilities, office-shops (double-storey, three-storey, four-storey and six-storey) and a 200-room 12-storey hotel.

Abang Johari noted that the new project would be on 12.6 acres at Jalan Datuk Marican Salleh close to Pending Heights Industrial Area, Tun Salahuddin Bridge and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. It is approximately five kilometres from the city centre.

“I hope this project would produce other strategic areas for us to develop the best infrastructure,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar; Assistant Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais; UDA Holdings Berhad chairman Datuk Jalaluddin Alias; and SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain.
