KUCHING: Severe penalties must be imposed on foreign nationals found guilty of assaulting law enforcement officers, says Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

In addressing a recent case where an illegal immigrant struck a police officer manning a roadblock, Minos said such ill behaviour must not be tolerated.

“Our enforcers are merely carrying out their duties to ensure compliance with the MCO (movement control order). They should be respected.

“Any foreigner caught doing harm to any of our MCO enforcers must be incarcerated depending on the severity of the case. Offenders must also be deported and banned from re-entering Malaysia,” he stressed.

Minos added that the case had shed light on a more concerning issue — the substantial number of illegal immigrants residing in the country.

“This reminds us of the many illegal immigrants in our country. These people should not be allowed in as all foreigners who enter the country must provide sufficient travel documents without exception.

“Any Malaysian who allows any illegal immigrants to enter the country must also be penalised,” he said.

Minos added that illegal immigrants were also possible causes of other concerning issues related to crime, disease, bad habit and bad culture.

“Malaysia must be free of these people. We can only rely on an effective immigration implementation, especially by those looking after our borders, and shores.

“Once these illegal immigrants are in the country, there is nothing we, the ordinary folk, can do except to report them to the authorities,” he said.
