LAWAS: Islamic values should serve as the basis for Sarawak’s strategy for sustainable development, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He emphasised the importance of adhering to the dynamic teachings of the Quran, stating that history has proven that societies can progress in every way by following its principles.

Abang Johari speaks during the state-level al-Quran recitation ceremony.

“Along with that, the task of the driving generation is to try to revive the Islamic community on its original foundations,” he said during the state-level al-Quran recitation ceremony held at the Darul Ma’mur Mosque in Lawas last night (April 7).

Abang Johari then noted that this year marks the third year of the implementation of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan.

In this light, he stressed the need for the government to prioritise high-impact projects in the mid-term review that align with the PCDS 2030’s urgent development plans.

He said assessing performance is crucial in order to verify that the plans are progressing appropriately towards accomplishing their set goals.

He added that Sarawak’s growth towards becoming a developed region must focus on economic prosperity, social engagement, and environmental sustainability.

On the same note, Abang Johari said that a celebration will be held this year to mark Sarawak’s 60th independence anniversary, which will be jointly celebrated with Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

“We will hold various programmes and activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Malaysia.

“Therefore, I call upon all Sarawakians to unite and ensure harmony in diversity by celebrating Malaysia’s multiculturalism.

“Let us make Sarawak a prosperous and progressive region for the benefit of all,” he said.

The ceremony was graced by the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib.

They were accompanied by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
