Raids net 10 human trafficking suspects

A Bau CID team raids a house in Jalan Buan Buso and arrests a group of seven Indonesians hiding inside.

BAU: Seven undocumented migrants and three locals suspected of being involved in illegal human trafficking were arrested in two separate locations.

District police chief DSP Poge Nyaon said the first arrest took place around 11am on Christmas Day in Jalan Buan Buso.

A Bau CID team raided a house and managed to arrest seven Indonesian men hiding inside.

Following the arrest and investigation, the team arrested three locals aged between 26 and 30, on the next day (Dec 26) at Kampung Buso.

It was believed that the locals are responsible for smuggling in the group of Indonesians into the state.

DSP Poge said all arrested individuals are remanded and will be charged under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007 and Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

If convicted under Atipsom 2007, the offenders can be sentenced to a jail term not exceeding five years and can be fined a maximum of RM250,000 or both.

Whereas for under the Immigration Act, the offender can be sentenced to a jail term not less than three months and not more than two years and be caned not less than three strokes, upon conviction.
