KUCHING: The Solid Waste Segregation and Recycling programme is to raise awareness on the importance of recycling practices among the students in schools.
In stating this, chairman of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Tan Kai said that the programme also showed the students the negative effect of improper waste recycling to the environment towards the environment and humanity.
“As we all know, this issue is not new. In fact, our council has always brought this as part of our agenda during our meetings.
“This is to raise the people’s awareness and to remind them that they are responsible as a community to take care of the environment as a whole,” he said.
He said this in his speech when officiating at the programme at SJK Chung Hua Stapok, Batu Kawa here today.
He added that in order to reach the targeted rate of recycling, the habits and mindset of the people must be changed through and through.
“This is because the solid waste is increasing more than ever, with the increasing population and the rapid economic development activities.
“Therefore in order to achieve that, our recycling practice and cleanliness must be started at home and from us.
“As adults, we should teach our children to do the same thing, whether it is at home or at school,” he added.
He also hoped for further collaboration between the council, the school and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd which could contribute to the needed expertise for the benefits of the students on the programme as well.
“I hope that we will continue this effort not only in this school, but other schools as well, at home, together with the local community,” he added.
