Reckless driving: 18 youths hauled up

KUCHING: Traffic police here have arrested a total of 18 youths for reckless and dangerous driving from January to April this year.

The District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department also conducted a total of 11 ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ around Kuching in the four-month period.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement, said the youths aged between 14 and 20, were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Upon conviction, the youths can be sentenced to a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to RM15,000 as well as disqualification from driving for up to five years from the date of conviction, for the first offence.

He added that the division also opened a total of 17 traffic investigation papers and of the figure, 16 of them have been prosecuted in court.

Throughout this year, the Kuching Traffic Special Court Unit has successfully prosecuted five young offenders.

Ahsmon advised the public not to turn the road into a place for racing and a place to show off their prowess as this is against the law and it endangers themselves and other road users.
