KUCHING: The husband of an 87-year-old pensioner, who lost her bank debit card in Nov 2023, has sought assistance from Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.

Despite numerous appeals by her husband, the bank has refused to renew her debit card.

This has prompted her husband to seek an assistance from Yap as she is currently in ill health with late stage dementia and physically bedridden.

“Because of the bank’s refusal to renew her credit card, her husband was unable to withdraw her government pension which was required for payment of her living and medical care expenses,” Yap said in a statement.

He stated that the government pension was no longer paid into her bank account at the local bank but there was still a balance of two months’ pension which she urgently needed to utilise for medical expenses.

“I have appealed to this bank to close her account and the money due to her to be paid by way of a cheque issued under her name with her husband standing as guarantor for the sum issued under the cheque.

“Following the appeal, the banker will visit the pensioner at her home to confirm the latest situation and will make a report to their head office for approval,” he said.

He added that banks would adopt compassionate banking as part of their corporate social responsibility.

“The concept is basically about the banking system acknowledging difficulties and showing empathy to problems faced by their customers in trying times,” he added.
