Rep pays working visit to Samalaju Port

Majang converses with Chukpai during a working visit to Samalaju Industrial Port.

BINTULU: Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development who is also Samalaju assemblyman, Datuk Majang Renggi, yesterday paid a working visit to Samalaju Port.

Accompanying Majang was Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development, Chiew Chee Yau, and other officials from the ministry.

During the working visit, he and his entourage were briefed by the chief executive officer of the Samalaju Industrial Port, Eizam Ismail.

In his briefing, Eizam said, in keeping with the promise to the Sarawak government in resolving issues centring on the time of ship recovery by December 2022, the management of Samalaju Port has made important progress in improving its port services to investors in the Samalaju Industrial Park.

He informed that the issue of port equipment, especially cranes, has also been fixed and deployed.

“Crane uptime plays an important role in improving overall productivity and ship turnaround time.

“In addition, the Port of Samalaju is also actively working to obtain additional port machinery, work with investors to improve the current shipping system and study to upgrade its infrastructure in line with the development of smart ports,” he said.

Samalaju Industrial Park is very important in contributing to Sarawak’s economy, recording an investment of RM21 billion from various investors and generating RM4.6 billion in spin-offs to the local economy.

Samalaju Port reported that its cargo exports have increased from 5.3 million tons in 2021 to 6.7 million tons in 2022.
