KUCHING: Children should never use the Rumah Seri Kenangan (RSK) welfare home as a ‘dumping ground’ for their elderly parents – just because they don’t want to care for them.

State Social Welfare Department director Joni Nuruddin stressed that the department would not accept applications from those who intend to “dump” their parents at RSK.

“Applications received are for those aged 60 and above, with no guardians or heirs, and not married.

“If they still have a family or children, then the application is usually due to family conflict.

“If there is such a case, we would advise the children or family to resolve the conflict and continue caring for their parents because it is their responsibility,” he said here today.

Meanwhile, statistics from two RSK in the state — Sibu and Kuching — showed that the majority of residents are Chinese.

Of the total 108 residents from the two RSK, 61 are Chinese, 17 are Malay, 19 are Iban, three are Melanau, two are Bidayuh while the rest are a Kedayan, a Kayan, a Kelabit, a Jawa, a Kenyah and an Indian.
