SAR for man feared drowned in Batang Igan

SIBU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been initiated to locate a local man reported missing in Batang Igan after he allegedly fell from Igan Bridge yesterday (Feb 20).

The victim has been identified as Kong Sien Chei, 50.

The incident is believed to have happened around 5pm and rescue agencies were promptly deployed to the scene.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the unfortunate incident was witnessed by two individuals at Rh Frederik Emperan Tekalong near Igan Bridge.

The first witness claimed a man wearing a red shirt and dark pants had jumped into the river while the second witness saw the victim struggling in the waters before he was drifted upstream.

Authorities also found a motorcycle believed to belong to the victim on the bridge.

The search involving firemen from Sungai Merah station, the police and Civil Defence Force (APM) is still ongoing with surface searching carried out over a 10km-radius upstream.
