Sarawak faces contractor shortage due to rising number of ongoing projects

KABONG: More contractors are needed to accommodate the number of ongoing construction projects throughout Sarawak.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the shortage was also caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I hope that there will be more trained contractors, young Sarawakian contractors for the future”, he said.

He said this i during a meet-the-people session at Kabong Hawker Centre here today (Nov 18).

The Premier explained that he had come to Kabong himself to look at the delayed construction of an approved community hall here.

“I brought the director of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), members of Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) and (other agencies) with me today.

“I want to see the approved projects, whether there are any shortcomings that caused the projects to be delayed.

“The Kabong Hawker Centre now has been completed while there are several others which are yet to be completed,” he added.

He later added that while the mosques, and the villages in the area of Kabong have already been completed and more houses are to be built.

Also present were Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir, and Betong Resident Richard Michael Abunawas.
