KUCHING: The Sarawak government will work with industry players to develop a furniture park in Kuching and Tanjung Manis.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said furniture parks were expected to generate approximately RM500mil in investment and an estimated export value of RM4bil by 2030.

“The infrastructure and facilities will become a catalyst to attract local and foreign investors in the furniture industry, especially for the export market.”

He said this when launching the Integrity and Innovation Day, and Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) 2022 Assembly here on Wednesday (Feb 9).

He also said a furniture testing laboratory in Kota Samarahan, which is under construction, would provide services to test local furniture’s compliance to global market standards for both local and export markets.

At the same time, Awang Tengah stated that the Sarawak government was encouraging the development of bamboo plantations, with a target of 10,000 hectares by 2030.

“This is to ensure adequate supply of bamboo to support the development of bamboo-based downstream industries such as furniture, engineered bamboo-based products, handicrafts, cosmetics, fuel and food, with an estimated export value of RM250mil by 2030.”
