KUCHING: A data centre for water pipe mapping needs to be developed to better manage the utility in the state, especially in Kuching, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In proposing the idea to Kuching Water Board (KWB), Abang Johari said the centre should include data on water supply and distribution.

“You must have, because you have to change the pipes which are more than 60 years old, you have to lay new pipes to replace the old pipes and to help detect any leakages as they will be reflected in the data.

“Then if you were to replace you will know the place, meaning your technologies must be there,” he said in his speech at the KWB’s 60th anniversary dinner, here, last night.

Abang Johari said this was the new way forward for the state to manage utilities and services for the public as Kuching is heading towards becoming a smart city and should have smart utility management.

He also suggested the KWB and the Utilities Ministry consider having a forward-looking approach in this matter by taking consideration the increasing population, especially in Kuching.

“From 60,000 population (in Kuching), our population now is almost one million meaning you are going to have one million consumers,” he added. – Bernama
