Sarawak records another all-time high Covid-19 cases

KUCHING: Sarawak registered an all-time high of 2,548 new positive Covid-19 cases in a single day on Friday (Aug 20), overtaking the previous record of 1,566 cases reported just a few days earlier on Monday (Aug 16).

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) revealed that among the districts, Kuching accounted for the highest number of cases at 1,601, followed by Serian (240), Bau (131), Samarahan (116), Lundu (94), Simunjan (60), Tebedu (41), Sibu (38), Bintulu (37), Belaga (36), Pusa (30), Mukah (22), Sri Aman (22), Sarikei (12), Asajaya (11), Subis (9), Miri (8), Saratok (7), Selangau (6), Bukit Mabong (5), Pakan (5), Tatau (4), Lawas (3), Kapit (2), Sebauh (2), Betong (1), Kanowit (1), Lubok Antu (1), Song (1), Julau (1), and Beluru (1).

“Of the new cases, 1,571 are individuals who had contact with positive cases, 407 are individuals from existing active clusters, 208 are from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities, and 346 are from other screenings at health facilities.

“Three of the new cases are individuals who have arrived or returned from overseas (Import A), namely two cases from Indonesia and one from Qatar, while 13 cases are individuals who have returned or entered from other states in Malaysia (Import B), namely six cases from Kuala Lumpur, five from Sabah, and one each from Selangor and Kedah,” SDMC said on Friday.

SDMC stated that 2,547 of the new cases or 99.96 per cent were in Categories 1 and 2 and there was one case in Category 5.

“A total of 2,224 cases or 87.28 per cent are in Category 1 (no symptoms), 323 cases or 12.68 percent are in Category 2 (mild symptoms), and one case (0.04 percent) is in Category 5 (lung infection and requires ventilator).”

No deaths related to Covid-19 were reported on Friday.

SDMC said that 355 new cases had been discharged from hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) in the state.

Of these, 183 cases were discharged from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and its PKRC, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) PKRC (51), Serian PKRC (38), Sibu Hospital and its PKRC (37), Bintulu Hospital and its PKRC (14), Miri Hospital and its PKRC (11), Sri Aman Hospital and its PKRC (11), Betong PKRC (8), and Sarikei Hospital and its PKRC (2).

“This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases to 81,198 or 85.87 percent of the total number of cases in Sarawak.”

There are still 12,686 active cases remaining in the state.
