KUCHING: The Satok constituency is all geared up to face any eventuality of flooding this time.
Its assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said preparations have been made to ensure no recurrence of the flood disaster that occurred back in 2004.
“Back then, the flood took us by surprise and we were unprepared for it. That is why since then, our constituency has always been ready to face floods and be on alert to help areas that are prone to be flooded.
“For this year, we have prepared 10 boats of which five small ones are from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to help people who are in need,” he said, adding that Kampung Kudei Lama, Kampung Kudei Baru, Kampung Sungai Maong, Kampung Segedup are some of the villages prone to flooding.
He said this during a press conference on the Satok constituency’s flood preparation programme at Dewan Haji Kamaruddin, Kpg Segedup here on Saturday.
He noted that for his constituency, there are 10 Temporary Transfer Centres (PPS) to accommodate almost 2,000 people in the area.
“We have equipped our PPS with various necessities including a place to sleep, basic food, toilets, shower room, and so on. Some of the PPS are even equipped with air conditioning.
“Moreover, our service centre will always be on alert in case disaster strikes, we will be open 24/7 and ready to help our people. On top of that, each village has its own Squad Banjir to help the people immediately.
“I can say that we are more than ready and more coordinated this time. Nevertheless, it is still our hope that floods will not occur,” he said.
Aside from Dewan Haji Kamaruddin, Kpg Segedup here, other PPS that are under the Satok constituency are Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Sarawak; Dewan Suarah; SK Rakyat Bolhassan; SMK Sungai Maong; Masjid Darul Aqsa, Segedup; Masjid Darul Istiqlal, Sg Maong; SMK Green Road; Sungai Maong Community Hall; and Kampung Sungai Maong Community Centre.
