KUCHING:  Members of the Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) conducted a crime prevention programme at Mile 7 (Sentosa town), Kuching – Serian Road yesterday morning.

A team of eight community policing members led by SCPA chairman Datuk Dr John Lau Pang Heng conducted the programme. It was held due to requests from stall owners at the wet market.

SCPA distributed crime prevention leaflets to shoppers and stall owners on how residents could prevent a crime. It also informed them to alert the police whenever they saw any suspicious persons.

Lau said that for the community to be safe and secure, there was a need to do prevention first, work with the police and build neighbourhood chat-group. In this way, the community would be safer.

“Crime prevention is every citizen’s role and responsibility,” he said.

Lau also assured the stall owners that SCPA would request the police to conduct patrols regularly in their areas.

He also recommended that citizens conduct crime prevention patrols with the police.

“My recent research has established that crime and fear of crime will be low when citizens work with the police in crime prevention,” he stressed.
