MIRI: The body of a 17-year-old who drowned in Peliau Beach, Bekenu on Saturday has been found less than 24 hours after he was reported missing.

According to Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (MFRD), the body of Sharizan Amani Sepawi was recovered by villagers around 9 am this morning, approximately 20 metres away from where he was last seen.

While three of his friends survived, Sharizan was swept away by strong currents.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation was initiated soon after the MFRD Miri Zone received a distress call at 5.59 pm on Saturday.

The body has been handed over to the police for further action.
