KUCHING: The smart metering system will be extended to Sibu, Bintulu and Miri by 2024.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said that to-date 55,000 smart meters have been installed in Kuching by Sarawak Energy’s utility arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad.
“The transition to the smart metering system is expected to be done in phases until 2029, considering external factors such as global availability of the meters and speed of delivery.
“By embracing these technologies and strategies, Sarawak is not only meeting the growing demands for electricity but also driving the transition towards a sustainable and intelligent power grid that benefits us all,” he said in his speech titled ‘Transforming Utilities and Telecommunication: A Journey of Innovation and Connectivity’ 27th World Congress on Innovation and Technology (WCIT) and the 6th International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
He said the transition programme will be implemented throughout Sarawak in stages, paying particular attention to high population regions first and at no extra cost to customers.
Julaihi said the effort is aimed at improving customer experience and introducing an efficient and fast billing system by Sarawak Energy Berhad and replacing conventional meters with smart meters equipped with advanced features.
“With the smart metering system, invoices may be generated accurately and quickly without the need for physical readings.
“In order to encourage more energy-efficient practices, advanced services will also be made accesible in the future such as real-time tracking and recording by the client of their electricity usage.
“The system also enables efficient surveillance and immediate alerts on supply interruptions triggering a speedy restoration response,” he added.
