KUCHING: A struggling single mother has reached out to Hope Place, a local charity body for help.

Norhayati Abdullah, 58, lives in a rundown wooden house at Kampung Kemayau, Serian with her two children who are still studying, namely one in Form 2 and another is studying for her diploma.

“I am grateful that my daughter was able to get a PTPTN government loan to continue her diploma studies,” she said.

She has six children, but four of them are married and living elsewhere. Her only income comes from selling wild vegetables and kuih.

Norhayati said she had struggled to provide for her two children ever since her husband passed away four years ago.

“I am thankful to the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for helping to repair my house’s roof,” said Norhayati. She also receives RM100 from JKM on a monthly basis.

Hope Place is helping Norhayati’s family with basic food aid. For more information, Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching can be reached at 082-505987 from 8.30am-5.30pm from Monday to Friday, and 8.30am-12.30pm on Saturday.
