Six months’ jail for possessing stolen laptop

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to six months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today for possessing a stolen laptop in December last year.

Ammy’een, 21, pleaded guilty to a charge read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charge, he and another accomplice were accused of possessing a stolen laptop, a Victus brand, belonging to a 29-year-old male victim.

The accused and his accomplish, both 18-year-old offenders, were alleged to have had the stolen item while detained at the D4 Crime Investigation Department of Sarawak IPK, around 2 pm on December 16, 2023.

Therefore, they were charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same code.

Syarifah Fatimah ordered the first accused to begin serving the prison sentence today. Meanwhile, the second accused awaits a social report.

Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, the owner of an electrical goods supply shop, was informed by a friend residing above the shop that the premises had been burglarised.

The complainant immediately went to his shop and found the front door forcibly opened and several items missing, including a Victus laptop, seven rolls of electrical cables, and a cashier machine.

A police report was filed by the complainant, leading to the arrest of both accused on December 28, 2023.

Upon investigation, it was found that both accused possessed stolen property, namely a laptop owned by the complainant, based on the identification of the serial number of the item.
