LIMBANG: A snatch thief was arrested for allegedly stealing two gold necklaces from two women early this year.

The arrest was made by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) last Sunday (July 30) following an extensive three-month long intelligence operation.

Limbang police chief Supt Parum Niot said the 36-year-old suspect was believed to be connected to two snatch theft cases that occurred in February and April this year.

“The first incident took place on Feb 28 when the suspect snatched a gold necklace from a 59-year-old woman outside her residence along Jalan Batu Biah.

“Two months later, on April 14, the suspect struck again and snatched another gold necklace from a 63-year-old woman near a grocery store along Jalan Buangsiol-Perbahanan,” he said.

The cases are being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries up to 14 years in jail and a fine or corporal punishment.

The next day (July 31), the police made a subsequent arrest around 11am and this time, it was a secondary suspect — the proprietor of a goldsmith shop in town — who was allegedly involved in the sales and purchase of the stolen necklaces.

Parum said the suspects as well as the seized items have been taken to Limbang police station for further investigation.

The public are advised to be more careful and take precautions when being alone or in the parking lot to avoid being robbed and avoid walking alone in quiet areas.
