TATAU: The Tatau district office and Tatau police today conducted a joint inspection and monitoring of the standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance at a longhouse.

Acting Tatau district officer Calvin Ligong, Tatau police chief DSP Jame Reis and administrative officer Winnie Dian were on the field to monitor the compliance of SOPs at Rumah Mat Sampei in Separai, today.

“The visit to Rumah Mat is to see if the longhouse residents are complying with the SOPs and making sure everyone adheres fully to the SOP guidelines,” said Calvin.

He added that Rumah Mat’s longhouse committee had set a good example to take the initiative, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, using ropes as borders between doors, using hand sanitisers and the MySejahtera QR code, which has decreased movements and avoid gatherings among residents.

He also urged every longhouse or village chief and the longhouse or village committee to be active in community policing to help the police to monitor SOP compliance.

“With community policing, we can help the frontline workers to reduce and control the spread of Covid-19,” said Calvin.

He also advised those living outside of the villages or longhouses to not return home during the Gawai.

Activities such as wedding ceremonies, the meri anak mit mandi (initiating a baby by bathing in the river) ceremony and cockfighting are prohibited during the Gawai Dayak celebration this year.

DSP Jame also advised the longhouse residents to stay put and continue following the guidelines, especially with the upcoming festive season.

“We have set up a task force to conduct monitoring and inspections of longhouses, making sure residents are complying with the SOPs during the festive Gawai Dayak.

“We, the police, advised residents of the longhouse to continue following the guidelines implemented by the government,” he said.

The police will take stern action and give out compounds if anyone is found not adhering to the guidelines during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) period.
