KUCHING: The Electoral Reform Committee (ERC) is proposing a special system for voters living in Sarawak’s rural areas. “We will come up with this special voting system so that those who can’t vote can do so in other ways. The same goes for coastal voters. We will need to discuss this further,” said its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman.

“We will do research on this matter and we will divide it into certain classes so that we can really make it happen to improve the voting process,” he further explained after attending a function at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak here yesterday.

Abdul Rashid also added that the population in Sarawak is bigger therefore “we want people to be well-educated in voting and get the chance to vote in any circumstances”. “We want them to vote so that it’s fair to everyone,” he pointed out.

Earlier on, Abdul Rashid attended a session that involved stakeholders from various departments as well as youth. “We want to inform them on the changes that we want to bring to the voting system and process, so that we can be on par with other democratic nations.”

The engagement sessions are to get the views of the public on the proposed improvements to the system and rules surrounding elections, said Abdul Rashid. “Through this engagement sessions, various problems have been identified concerning Malaysian registered voters overseas as well as their opinions in improving our voting system.”
