KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak government is setting its sights to look for a new building to provide accommodation for Sarawakian students of higher learning institutions in West Malaysia.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that he has spoken to caretaker Senior Work Minister and Sarawak Volunteers Association (Sarawak Volunteers) patron Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on matters pertaining to the students’ needs.

“I understand that one of the problems (faced by the students) is accommodation, and therefore, I have discussed the matter with Fadillah.

“Maybe, we will add one more building in Kuala Lumpur so that we can provide a place for our Sarawakian students to live and with reasonable rent,” he said.

He said this during the Sarawak Agenda Town Hall with Premier held in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2022 at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here on Saturday (Oct 15).

However, Abang Johari, who is also the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman, said a facility for the accommodation will need to be identified first.

At the same time, he also agreed to the students’ request on the setting up of a Sarawak Students Union.

“Thank you. I agree (on the setting up of the union).

“I think it is important to have an engagement between the university student leaders and us (state government) so that we can find a solution to the problems faced by the student,” he said.
