State records dip in new cases

KUCHING: Sarawak on Monday (Aug 23) recorded a drop in the number of daily Covid-19 cases with 1,538 new cases compared to 1,772 cases last Sunday.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the Kuching district once again recorded the highest number of new daily cases with 615, followed by Serian with 129 cases, Lundu with 115 cases, 103 cases in Samarahan and 102 cases in Pusa.

“New cases were also reported in other districts, including Simunjan with 65, Pakan (51), Bau (47), Belaga (44), Sibu (42), Bintulu (33), Sri Aman (22), Subis (21), Selangau (21), Song (20, Miri (16), Betong (16), Tebedu (11) and Asajaya (10).

“Apart from that, only a single-digit number of cases were reported in Lubok Antu, Meradong, Kanowit, Sarikei, Saratok, Tatau, Sebauh, Lawas, Beluru, Kapit and Kabong,” said the SDMC in its daily Covid-19 update.

It said 876 of the new cases consisted of individuals who were close contacts to positive cases.

“There are also 288 cases involving individuals in existing clusters, 85 cases from the screening of symptomatic individuals in health facilities, 280 cases from other screenings in health facilities, five cases from individuals returning from other states and four cases involving individuals returning to the state from abroad,” it explained.

The committee said three deaths were also recorded today, bringing the death toll to 501.

It said the first death was of an 86-year-old man from Daro who had no comorbidities.

“The second and third deaths in Kuching involved two men aged 69 and 80.

“The 69-year-old man had a history of high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, gout and chronic kidney disease while the 80-year-old man had no health issues,” the committee explained.
