KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) has presented the government with its wish list for this year’s Teachers’ Day.

STU president Adam Prakash Abdullah said the government, especially the Ministry of Education (MOE) should continue to provide and upgrade the education curriculum to meet the country’s current development.

He said the curriculum should also take into account the current Covid-19 situation, the home-based learning, assessment tools and procedures so that our education system provides meaningful and practical education for our learners.

The union also hopes that MOE will continue to improve the teachers’ working and living environment, provide better social protection services as well as recognise their contributions nationwide, he added.

“Apart from that, we would be grateful if the state government could increase the number of the state’s Long Service Medal award recipients.

“That would be a commendable move towards appreciating the teachers who have rendered their services to the state tirelessly,” said Adam in a statement recently.

He also pointed out that the upgrading of school buildings and facilities should be prioritised so that students in the rural areas could enjoy the comfort of learning in a conducive environment.

He elaborated further that they also include resolving the internet accessibility issues soon to ensure that the students and teachers are able to compete and rise to the global standards and not be deprived in terms of basic education tools.

“In conjunction with the coming Teachers’ Day, STU would like to wish all teachers a very Happy Teachers’ Day and we hope that they will continue their dedicated services under all circumstances.

“No one can deny that teachers play a vital role in nation building by teaching and providing knowledge; and training life and professional skills with the correct aptitude and attitude.

“The students will always remember and appreciate the services that we have provided them with,” he concluded.

This year’s Teachers’ Day theme is Berguru Demi Ilmu, Bina Generasi Baharu.
